Most will arrive with detailed plans for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/22\/dining\/olympic-village-paris-2024-food.html\" title>what to eat<\/a> before, during and after their events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPart of their training is their nutrition,\u201d said Sarah Wick, a sports dietitian and the director of sports nutrition for the Ohio State Sports Medicine Institute. \u201cIt\u2019s just like strength and conditioning. They need to know just what nutrition they need, and when they need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">High-performance athletes require plenty of carbohydrates for energy and enough protein to repair their muscles and recover between workouts. Every event and athlete has different needs, but they all require fuel, and lots of it. Still, that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re eating only health foods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/olympics\/news\/usain-bolt-beijing-olympics-2008-chicken-nuggets\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Usain Bolt<\/a>, for one, estimated that he ate 100 McDonalds chicken nuggets each day at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, because they were a familiar food he knew his stomach could handle.
