And having strong feet with dexterous toes is important for both for health and fitness, said Courtney Conley, the founder of Gait Happens, a Colorado-based online education resource focused on foot health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But most people first learn about the concept of foot strengthening after an injury, she said. Incorporating foot and toe exercises into your routine long before you develop shin splints or plantar fasciitis <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/11\/151117181929.htm\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">can help prevent<\/a> those injuries and improve how you walk, especially as you age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cToe weakness is the single <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19751956\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">biggest predictor of falls<\/a> when we get older,\u201d Dr. Conley said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-dfca808\">Why foot strength is important<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In some ways, simply moving through life on your feet gives them a workout, said Martin Ellman, a podiatrist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. You engage the foot core \u2014 a network of tiny muscles in your feet that create balance and provide stability \u2014 every time you stand or walk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The foot should act like a tripod, said Dr. Conley.
