Here are some good and bad habits they suggest starting \u2014 or stopping.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-be761\">Bad habit: Using a toothbrush or toothpaste that contains charcoal<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Charcoal-infused brushes and toothpastes can be effective at whitening teeth, but the benefits come at a cost.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cCharcoal is incredibly abrasive,\u201d Dr. Messina said. \u201cIt whitens your teeth by sanding away the outer layer of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/12\/well\/live\/weak-teeth-enamel.html\" title>tooth enamel<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Enamel is the hard, crystalline tissue that covers and protects your teeth.
