But the Paris Games could soon edge them out for the title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1N0tP4DwcXvnTNACNWNxNxc2I3FWFR-Lb\/view\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">A June report<\/a> highlighted the potential health risks for athletes competing in extreme heat at this year\u2019s Games. According to the report, which was published by the British Association for Sustainable Sport and the Australian environmental organization Frontrunners, the average temperatures during July and August in Paris have increased by an average of more than 5.5 degrees Fahrenheit since the Olympics were last held in Paris, in 1924.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Training for the Olympics is now as much about athletes\u2019 ability to handle the heat as it is about strength and speed. That\u2019s especially true for endurance events like the marathon, race walk and triathlon, where many competitors will compete for hours without breaks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe best way a person can prepare is acclimatization,\u201d said Dr. Carolyn Broderick, the medical director of the Australian Olympic team at the Paris Olympics. \u201cBut that involves training in the heat \u2014 not just being in the heat,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It can take two to three weeks of heat training to fully adjust, Dr. Broderick said, but some of the effects can be seen in the first seven days.
