But training your nose can fight off the decline.<\/p>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Your grandma\u2019s brownies, the scent of rain on a pine forest, a whiff of cardamom \u2014 smells can be powerful time machines, unlocking memories almost like magic and transporting you to specific moments more vividly than vision or hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But just like vision and hearing, our sense of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychology\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2014.00020\/full\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">smell diminishes with age<\/a> (and as a result of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/neurology\/articles\/10.3389\/fneur.2020.569333\/full\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">infections<\/a> like Covid, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6731037\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">smoking<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/pdf\/10.1289\/EHP136\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pollution<\/a>). About <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/quick-statistics-taste-smell#:~:text=The%20prevalence%20of%20any%20type,Americans%20ages%2080%20and%20above.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">11 percent<\/a> of Americans in their 50s experience trouble smelling; that number rises to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/quick-statistics-taste-smell#:~:text=The%20prevalence%20of%20any%20type,Americans%20ages%2080%20and%20above.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">39 percent<\/a> for those over 80.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When our noses lose their sharpness, our mental health often suffers too. A diminished sense of smell is associated with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/neuroscience\/articles\/10.3389\/fnins.2023.1200448\/full?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fdzen.ru%2Fmedia%2Fid%2F65aa585af710c9537f22bbd1%2F65c8f4b4c35b69234e2ac797\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">worsening memory<\/a>, cognition and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1111\/joss.12905\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">overall well-being<\/a> \u2014 as well as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/alz.12932#:~:text=This%20population-based%20study%20of,potent%20indicator%20of%20future%20dementia.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dementia<\/a> and depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOur brains need a lot of olfactory stimulation in order to maintain their health,\u201d said Michael Leon, a professor emeritus of neurobiology at the University of California, Irvine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Fortunately, a diminished sense of smell <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/19458924221150977\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">may be reversible<\/a>, perhaps by something as simple as spending some time with your spice rack.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-92e32b4\">Why smell is so important in the brain<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Scientists have long recognized that a reduced ability to detect and identify scents may be an early symptom of conditions such as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0165032713008665\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">depression<\/a>, dementia and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34266602\/#:~:text=Olfactory%20impairment%20is%20a%20common,onset%20of%20typical%20clinical%20manifestations.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/a>. You may notice, for example, that your favorite wine has somehow lost its nose, or fail to notice that food is spoiling in your fridge, said Sarah Banks, an adjunct professor of neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego.
